I Love Wet Socks

In the moment I thought I would die, I wanted to live to feel that wet sock feeling. Why?

I Hope You Fail

Updated: Mar 14, 2020

If there is anything I could hope for my friends or for my future children, it's that I hope they get a chance to be failures.

A friend once told me, “God can work with failures, not quitters”. I believe that failures are powerful. Failure isn’t meant to be a permanent position, but rather, a stepping point. If you quit, you decide to stay where you’ve fallen as a victim of opportunity.

"You need to be like rain, being fearless to fall."

The way I see it is that when you come to a staircase if you don’t step up, it’ll hurt. You’re going to come across times in life that, from where you’re at, are daunting, but as you work to step up, step by step, you are elevated and can look back and be amazed how you’ve come so far. You don’t start from the bottom and go straight to the second floor. You will stumble, but if you choose to give up, you can’t be helped or progress, and sometimes you need to fall in order to get back up (and learn the lessons that you will go through on your way back up). Failure is an opportunity! You need to be like rain, being fearless to fall. Let me tell you now- I’m a RAINSTORM.

Throughout this adventure of health, people have complimented me on how strong I am, but the truth is, I fail. I fail a lot. While I am grateful for the opportunities I have and for all I am able to learn, it doesn’t mean I don’t struggle in the moment to remind myself of that. The truth is, it gets hard in the moment. You can have a clear long-term plan, but how to get there is moment by moment, and those details can get a little blurry. But that’s okay! It can get blurry, you can fall, but what matters is you get back up. If you decide to quit, if you give in to the pain and give up on trying, you are giving up on your long-term plan. You then become a quitter, and God can’t work with those. That is your choice, but if you are not stepping up when you try to move forward, it’s gonna hurt unless you do step up. It’s your choice, and that’s the beauty of life because no one can make you do anything. BUT JUST BECAUSE YOU SLIP UP, IT DOESN’T MEAN THE GAME IS OVER!

"No failure ever need be final" - Thomas S. Monson

It’s okay to fail for a bit, to slip up. Fall like rain, my friends! You always have the chance to get back up again. You haven’t come this far to only come this far. The only difference between those who quit and those who don’t is that the ones who follow through get to see all the things they would’ve missed. As Thomas S. Monson said, “no failure ever need be final”; when you fall, think of it as a temporary break, not a new permanent residence.

What I’ve learned is that yes, sometimes in the moment, when you are in such pain you didn’t think you could handle, it is distracting enough to bruise your optimism (bruise, not destroy). As hard as it may seem in the moment, you don’t have to let that moment define you- you write your own story, so choose if you are going to stay down or step up. I can promise you, there has never been a time where I have learned more and gained more experience than when I was working to get back up. Failures are an opportunity to find your strength, and you can “fail your way to success” (Thomas Edison). Don’t be afraid to fall, because you can get back up stronger. Stay strong, and stay beautiful!
